OVERVIEW

Beginning Music Theory introduces fundamentals of organized sound, emphasizing rules of Western music composition and offering opportunities to create original works.  Students will develop the ability to describe, understand, and recognize aspects of tonal music, and skills in sight-singing, dictation/aural, written aspects, composition, and analytical areas.  Students will be exposed to a variety of exercises designed to develop these skills including listening, performance, writing, creating, and analyzing music.  While the main emphasis is placed on music of the Common Practice Period (1600-1750), music of other stylistic periods may also be studied. Explores use of technology for composition. 

OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, students should have a mastery of the rudiments and terminology of music, including hearing and notating: pitches, intervals, scales and keys, chords, meter, rhythm.  Also, the student should be competent in melodic and harmonic dictation, composing using specific part-writing rules, realizing a figured bass and Roman numeral progressions, analysis of repertoire, and sight-singing.

Grading

​Grades will be weighed as follows:
Formative Assessments: (50%)
  • Participation in Class Discussion / Daily Grades - 15%
  • Assignments/Projects/Quizzes - 15%
  • Study Guides - 20%

Summative Assessments (50%)
  • Chapter Tests - 20%
  • Midterm Exam - 15%
  • Final Exam - 15%

Grading Penalties:
  • 1 day late = 25 points deducted from the grade
  • 2 days late = 50 points deducted from the grade
  • 3 days late = no credit 
Compositions & Project Assignments
  • Minus 20 points per day late
  • Assignment must be turned in no later than the nine-week grading period for 50% credit.

  • To refrain from eating during class
  • To abstain from any cell phone use (cell phones should not be out or seen)
  • To raise your hand before asking relevant questions or leaving the room
