Digital Learning Day: FRIday, March 20

CHAPTER 7: HARMONIC PROGRESSION
HARMONIC PROGRESSION
Harmonic progression is the way in which chords succeed each other in a piece of music.  A progression is when the harmonies proceed from a stable beginning (tonic function - the I Chord), move forward through progressively more active chords, including seventh chords, to end (resolve) once again with stability (the I Chord). Common harmonic progression charts are frequently used and reflect chords in root position.  Keep in mind that this is a rough outline as almost all pieces/songs will use chords in inversion.
The Tonic Chord (I) (or in the case of minor, i) is the most stable of all chords.  Most pieces of music begin on Tonic (I)  and end on Tonic (I).  Chords that move away from the Tonic (I) tend to create tension (unrest, instability, or excitement).  Chords that progress toward the Tonic give fulfillment and relax the tension caused by the moving away from it.

Look at the video below, as he discusses how chords begin moving away from Tonic (I) and eventually find their way back to Tonic (I).
Take a look at this lesson on Common Chord Progressions

If that all seems confusion, below is a very thorough video to help you understand the functions of harmonic progressions.  Please take notes to help you with the quiz!

After taking the simple quiz over the video, check out at this link below (Hook Theory) and see how most songs follow the same chords and progressions

Pretty cool Huh?

FYI - I have set up a Zoom Meeting with you all on Tuesday (March 24) at 12noon.  Hopefully we can use the Zoom Meeting to catch up, review these lessons, and answer any questions you have about these lessons.  Please set a reminder on your phone so you do not forget.  Hope you all are safe and well.  GO BEARS!
